Description: Single cells 10-18 _m long and 7-10 _m wide, flattened with an irregular to elliptical or ovoid outline. Cell walls absent. Cell anterior elongated with a basal, cytopharynx depression in which a single flagellum is inserted. Flagellar length one to two times as long as the cell. Cells with rapid sliding motion based on flagellar beating. Chloroplasts two per cell (sometimes one or three), plate or cup shaped and parietal. A single leucosin granule in cell posterior. Cells without stigma, contractile vacuoles and pyrenoids. Asexual division by longitudinal division of motile cells. Resistant cells have never been observed although cyst envelopes (double) common. Beckingia in marine or brackish water; rarely observed and only in cultures from southern Australia and the former Czechoslovakia.
