Description: Unicellular, solitary, attached organisms. Cell body, 20 _m long and 30 _m wide, tubular and elongated to form a basal, attachment pedicel 72 _m long, contractile membrane, membranous or rigid. The extreme upper end of the cell is expanded to form a cup which supports a cover or epitheca ornamented with several moveable spines 9 _m long. Cytoplasm hyaline with two, dark green, lobed chloroplasts and large oil droplets. Neither flagella nor contractile vacuoles present. Asexual reproduction not observed. Heterocalycina very rare; epiphytic on the marine diatom Licmophora; known only from Israel. Only a single specimen of this genus was observed by its author and there are several gaps in its description among which are absence of a Latin diagnosis and a figure. Bursa described the entity initially with the words "Epiphytic flagellates . ." and later used the words "No flagella . . ". It is clearly necessary to reexamine this taxon.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
