Description: Unicellular, solitary, free-living, non-motile organisms 7 µm diameter. Cells spherical or nearly so, always slightly flattened at the upper pole. Cell wall delicate, possibly ornamented, with 12 bristles to 40 µm long of which six are inserted at the upper pole, many much longer than the cell and in the form of rigid spines. At the level of the lower pole they are curved and separated from one another like the ribs of an umbrella. The six others are inserted (according to Pascher and Ettl), just below the upper pole, thus giving the impression of developing at the summit of the cell; however, the figure of Lohmann shows them attached at the lower pole, and his description is clear on this feature. Cells with numerous, discoid, parietal chloroplasts. Method of asexual reproduction unknown. Skiadosphaera is a very rare genus reported from coastal habitats of the Mediterranean in marine or brackish water. A revision of the genus is needed.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
