Holotype species: Pleuromastix bacillifera A.Scherffel

Original publication and holotype designation: Scherffel, A. (1912). Zwei neue, trichocystenartige Bildungen führende Flagellaten. Archiv für Protistenkunde 27: 94-128.

Description: Free-swimming, lentil-shaped, uniflagellate monads; markedly compressed, ovate, with a rough margin, with an obliquely truncate anterior and often also with an obliquely truncate posterior giving the cell a rhombic shape; with a stigma; two contractile vacuoles, one near the stigma, the other near the flagellar base; one yellow-brown, dorsal chloroplast extending laterally but not to ventrum; ejectisomes present along the ventral margin; starch absent; flagellum inserted laterally; periplast thin, metabolic. An unusual freshwater genus known only from European waters. The method of reproduction has not been observed. The ultrastructure has not been examined.
