Holotype species: Epilithia adriatica Ercegović

Original publication and holotype designation: Ercegovic, A. (1932). Ekoloske i socioloske studije o litofitskim cijanoficejama sa jugoslovenske obale Jadrana. Rad Jugoslovenske Akademije Znanosti i Umjetnosti, Zagreb 244: 129-220, 10 figs, 7 pls, 11 tables.

Description: Colonial; thallus epilithic, small, pulverous, thin, irregular, composed of basal Gloeocapsa-like aggregations of more or less spherical or hemispherical cells and radiating pseudofilaments, short rows of cells enveloped by common sheath; rows of cells grow side by side, parallel and densely arranged and irregularly "branched". Sheaths more or less thickened, open at the apex of pseudofilaments; around cells usually single mucilaginous sheaths. Cells in pseudofilaments more or less oval, irregularly elongated or almost cylindrical. Cells divide irregularly in basal parts of thallus and more or less crosswise in the upper pseudofilaments. Reproduction by liberation of solitary cells from the thallus and, probably, by the dissociation of thallus. . Marine, epilithic in the supratidal zone of calcareous coasts; found only in the Mediterranean region (Yugoslavia Dalmatia). Little known genus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
