Holotype species: Pilgeria brasiliensis Schmidle

Description: Unicellular-colonial; colonies spherical, microscopic, free living, with cells gathered in one surface layer, without mucilaginous envelopes. Cells in outline polyhedral to pseudoparenchymatously disposed, tightly touching one another, blue-green or slightly violet, with granular content. Cell division and reproduction not known. In freshwater biotopes in Brasil. From the original description in 1901 not found again; very problematic genus.
