Stylosphaeridiella M. O. P. Iyengar, 1975

Holotype species: Stylosphaeridiella crucigeniae M.O.P.Iyengar

Description: Thalli unicellular with ovate or obovate cells 6 x 9-11 &m, attached by stalk ca 2 &m long. Cells with smooth walls and single anterior stigma. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast parietal and lateral with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by biflagellate zoospores, 3 x 5 &m; 8 per sporangium; initial division of sporangium transverse. Flagella about same length as cells. Sexual reproduction unknown. Stylosphaeridiella epiphytic on Crucigenia sp.; planktonic in roadside rainwater pool; reported only from Madras, India. Genus distinguished from Stylosphaeridium based on absence of contractile vacuoles and chloroplast position; requires taxonomic reevaluation.
