Holotype species: Gilbertsmithia grandis M.O.P.Iyengar

Description: Thalli colonial, with one or two generations of 4- or 8-celled coenobia to 30 x 22 &m in a flat plane and enclosed in a structureless gelatinous mucilage. In each coenobium cells form a definite ring with empty space in center and with cells firmly attached on lateral walls. Cells spherical to ovoid, 7-10 &m in diameter when mature with smooth cell walls. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single with a pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by synchronous formation of 4- or mostly 8-celled coenobium in each cell. After release of coenobia through slit-like opening, empty walls rectangular with ruptured conical side. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
