Crucigloea C.J.Soeder, 1978

Holotype species: Crucigloea crassiseta (Skuja) Soeder

Original publication and holotype designation: Soeder, C.J. (1978 '1977'). Crucigloea, a new name for Chaetopedia Skuja (Chlorophyceae). Algological Studies/Archiv für Hydrobiologie, Supplement Volumes 20: 305-307.

Description: Microscopic colonies forming a flat plate of cells embedded in slightly stratified mucilage with short to long, strait to curved mucilage projections at each corner to 35 &m long and 3-5 &m wide. Colony outline lobed, to 45 &m long, 30 &m wide and 11-12 &m thick. Cells 3-8 x 4-7 &m, roughly triangular or hemispherical first formed, later becoming more oval but slightly asymmetric. Cells walls smooth and thin. Cells uninucleate with one or two noncontractile vacuoles; chloroplast 1-2 per cell, parietal; pyrenoids absent. Asexual reproduction by colony fragmentation with colony growth by cell division to form new tetrads of cells. Spore production, flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Crucigloea planktonic in freshwater; reported only from humic, dystrophic lakes in Sweden. The highly characteristic colony morphology suggests that the genus is indeed endemic. . crassiseta var. puella distinguished by slightly smaller cell size and shorter mucilage projections at corners. Genus will require more critical study of reproduction and ultrastructure before affinities can be determined.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
