Tomaculum Whitford, 1943

Holotype species: Tomaculum catenatum L.A.Whitford

Original publication: Whitford, L. (1943). The freshwater algae of North Carolina. Journal of the Elisha Mitchell Scientific Society 59: 131-170.

Description: Microscopic colonial alga of up to 20 cells embedded in spherical to oval, colorless, mucilaginous envelope to 300 &m in length. Cells cylindrical, bent or with rounded lobes, 18-60 x 7 &m, connected to each other by fine threads of parental cell wall material. Cells uninucleate; one or two band-shaped, parietal chloroplasts with single pyrenoid. Reproductive mechanisms and flagellated stages unknown Tomaculum in freshwater associated with attached algae and water plants; reported only from North Carolina. Genus also assigned to Dictyosphaeriaceae by some authors and it is similar to Dictyochlorella reniformis in colony morphology.
