Description: Microscopic to macroscopic colonies over 10 cm diameter comprised of hundreds to thousands of cells embedded in amorphous mucilaginous matrix. Matrix colorless and poorly defined, visualized by staining with methylene blue. Cells more or less evenly dispersed in matrix, sometimes more abundant towards periphery. Cells sicle shaped t*o lunate, with pointed ends, 5-17 x 4-11 &m. Cell walls smooth. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast parietal and band shaped; pyrenoid single with starch sheath. Asexual reproduction by autospore formation and colony fragmentation; 2-4-8 (-16) spores per sporangium. Spores released by tear in sporangial wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Selenoderma in freshwater; mostly benthic and associated with macrophytes. Species of tropical or southern latitudes (Brazil, Argentina, southeast Asia, Bangladesh, South Africa). S. secktiana poorly known. Genus considered close to Kirchneriella from which it differs based on colony morphology and the presence of a starch sheath around the pyrenoid. Complex requires further study, especially electron microscopy.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
