Description: Cells solitary, elongate-ellipsoid to oval, enclosed within a wide, hyaline envelope (?mucilaginous) which is spirally twisted in the longitudinal axis and distinctly ribbed, 33-48 x 11-20 µm. Chloroplast single, parietal, with one pyrenoid. Method of reproduction poorly known. Apparently following division, the two daughter cells escape from the "mother-envelope," each subsequently forming the characteristic spirally twisted, ribbed hyaline envelope. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Chloropteridella has been infrequently reported as occurring uncommonly in acidic freshwater habitats in Europe. Similar to Scotiellopsis and Scottiella from which it differs in not having the ribs on the cell surface composed of cell wall material.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
