Echinocoleum C.-C.Jao & K.T.Lee, 1947

Holotype species: Echinocoleum elegans C.-C.Jao & K.T.Lee

Original publication and holotype designation: Jao, C.-C. & Lee, K.T. (1947). Echinocoleum elegans gen. et sp. nov. Botanical Bulletin of Academia Sinica 1: 107-109, 1 fig.

Description: Cells solitary, ellipsoid, 5-8 x (3)-3.5-6 µm, bearing finger-like mucilage protuberances, 4 µm wide at the base, up to 17 µm in length; sometimes occurring as 2-4-(8)-celled colonies within the mother cell mucilage envelope which bears the characteristic mucilage protuberances. Chloroplast single, parietal, U-shaped with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by 2-4-8 autospores, released by dissolution of the mother cell mucilage envelope. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Echinocoleum planktonic, reported from freshwater in China, Czechoslovakia, France and Hungary. Similar to Sestosoma from which it differs principally by having long, finger-like mucilage protuberances rather than very short, tooth-like mucilage protuberances and one chloroplast per cell rather than as many as four chloroplasts per cell.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
