Makinoella Okada, 1949

Holotype species: Makinoella tosaensis Y.Okada

Original publication and holotype designation: Okada, Y. (1949). Makinoella tosaensis, a new genus of the Oocystaceae. Journal of Japanese Botany 24: 166-168.

Description: Cells tetragonally arranged in flat, 4-16-celled coenobium with a wide mucilage envelope, the longitudinal axes of the cells forming a parallelogram. Cells ellipsoid to irregularly oval, slightly asymmetric, 22-30 x 16-18 µm; the coenobium, including the mucilage envelope, 58-76 x 42-50 µm. Cell wall thin, smooth, structureless. Chloroplasts parietal, numerous, discoid, without pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by formation of 4-celled daughter coenobium within the mother cell, the plane of the daughter coenobium perpendicular tot he plane of the mother coenobium; cells of daughter coenobia exhibiting the typical tetragonal arrangement and released upon mucilaginization of the mother cell wall. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Makinoella, planktonic, freshwater, known only from Japan. Komárek & Fott (1983), noting the numerous discoid chloroplasts without pyrenoids, suggest that this genus may belong to the Tribophyceae.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
