Description: Cells aggregated into 2-8-celled groups within an amorphous, structureless and colorless mucilage envelope. Cells nearly spherical, 3-16 µm in diameter, achlorophyllous, without chloroplast and pyrenoid. Method of reproduction not recorded. Spherical, thick-walled cysts with a tuberculate surface observed. Mycacanthococcus, freshwater. The type species known only from a moist cave in Czechoslovakia; the remaining species known from the cryoflora of Antarctica and United States. Komárek & Fott (1983) suggest that M. ovalis Wille in Gain (1912), including var. juneauensis Kol (1968), is conspecific with Cryocystis brevispina (Fritsch) Kol (1968).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
