Chlorepithema Pascher, 1940

Holotype species: Chlorepithema hemisphaericum (K.I.Meyer) Pascher

Description: Solitary cells in hemispherical, colorless lorica-like structure 35-40 &m long, 20-30 &m wide and 18-20 &m high. Protoplast egg shaped to spherical, 15-18 x 18 &m. Cells uninucleate with two contractile vacuoles. Chloroplast single and parietal with stigma and pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by zoospores; 2-8 per sporangium; spores released via an operculum. Sexual reproduction unknown. Chlorepithema only known as epiphyte on stalks of colonial diatoms (Gomphonema spp.); reported only from Lake Baikal in former USSR. Genus included in Chloremys by Fott (1972a). Taxonomic importance of operculum in Chlorepithema difficult to evaluate. Until more collections are found and ultrastructural studies of this genus and its putative relatives are undertaken, taxonomy will remain uncertain.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
