Dendrocystis Iyengar, 1962

Holotype species: Dendrocystis raoi M.O.P.Iyengar

Original publication and holotype designation: Iyengar, M.O.P. (1962). Dendrocystis raoi gen. et sp. nov., a new dendroid member of the Chlorococcales. Phykos 1: 1-15, 12 figs.

Description: Thalli forming microscopic dendroid, dichotomously branching colonies to 180 &m tall and 150 &m wide, attached by mucilage pad of initial basal cell. Colonies develop by longitudinal cell division and migration and attachment of both daughter cells to apex of parental wall. Cells ellipsoid, 24-36 x 10-16 &m. Cell walls smooth, with or without 3-6 elongate, straight or curved, hollow spines to 16-22 &m long. Cells with central nucleus and two large lipid bodies inside vacuoles; chloroplast diffuse and laminate with numerous starch grains; pyrenoids absent. Asexual reproduction poorly known, presumably by release of paired? autospores from cells of colony. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Dendrocystis known only from South India growing on stones in small stream.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
