Parapolytoma Jameson, 1914: 24
Holotype species: Parapolytoma satura Jameson
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Description: Unicellular thalli ovate, exhibiting a shallow invagination at the anterior end. Two anterior isokont flagella. Chloroplast, papillum, stigma and pyrenoid have not been observed. Cells lack photosynthetic pigment. Uninucleate with nucleus normally in anterior half of cell. Outer investment (termed a pellicle) present but does not exhibit metaboly. One anterior contractile vacuole (possibly articulating with the anterior depression). Asexual reproduction by zoosporogenesis (sporangium motile) resulting in four daughter zoospores. First division is transverse. No other asexual stages have been reported. No sexual stages have been observed in this genus. Parapolytoma differs from Polytoma principally in the possession of the anterior depression. Parapolytoma has (apparently) only been found in garden soil from the United Kingdom. Jameson provides a detailed description of cell division in this organism. No ultrastructural, biochemical, or molecular data are available for this organism

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
