Spirogonium Pascher, 1927

Holotype species: Spirogonium chlorogonioides Pascher

Original publication and holotype designation: Pascher, A. (1927). Die Süsswasser-Flora Deutschlands, Österreichs und der Schweiz. Volvocales = Phytomonadinae. Vol. 4 pp. 505. Jena: Fischer.

Description: Unicellular thalli spindle-shaped and twisted along the longitudinal axis. Four anterior isokont flagella. Papillum absent. Cell wall present. Chloroplast cup-shaped and contains a single large pyrenoid. Stigma present and very prominent. Nucleus positioned centrally. Two anterior contractile vacuoles. Asexual reproduction by zoosporogenesis producing four motile daughter cells. Daughter cells exhibit the mature form prior to liberation. No other asexual stages have been reported. No sexual stages have been observed in this genus. Spirogonium has been reported from a pool in Holstein (Germany) among a large assemblage of other algae. No ultrastructural, biochemical, or molecular data are available for this organism.
