Description: Thalli colonial, forming 4-celled coenobia, 6-10 µm wide, not embedded in mucilaginous matrix. In surface view colony forming a cross with mid portions of cells joined in center, cell appearing oval with pointed wall projection. Cells 3-4 x 2-3 µm, elongated in plane perpendicular to coenobium; in side view lunate with acuminate tips pointing away from colony; in vertical view cell fusiform with colorless pointed ends. Cell wall smooth. Cells uninucleate; chloroplasts single and parietal with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 4 per sporangium. Details of spore release not described. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Lauterborniella planktonic in freshwater, rare; reported from Java, Russia and United States. Bourrelly (1972) considers genus close to Tetradesmus from which it differs based on cell shape.
