Description: Small heterotrichous plants of erect uniseriate branched filaments connected to a prostrate system of densely packed filaments. Vegetative cells cylindrical, containing a parietal chloroplast with pyrenoid and starch. Sporangia special ovoid or ellipsoid cells with relatively thick walls, formed from the apical cells of erect branches. At maturity, zoospores escape through a relatively large exit pore in the upper end of the sporangia. Vegetative growth may continue through emptied sporangia; the old sporangial walls subsequently look like collars round the filaments. The type species known from the North West Atlantic, forms a green cover on shells and small stones. Some species previously referred to Pilinia should be transferred to Acroblaste.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
