Chloronephris Pascher & Jahoda, 1928

Holotype species: Chloronephris pigra Pascher & Jahoda

Original publication and holotype designation: Pascher, A. & Jahoda, R. (1928). Neue Polyblepharidinen und Chlamydomonadinen aus den Altümpeln um Lunz. Archiv für Protistenkunde 61: 239-281.

Description: Solitary, apparently wall-less green flagellates with 2 flagella inserted laterally in the bean- or kidney-shaped cells. Cells highly metabolic, containing a single parietal plate-like chloroplast without pyrenoid. An eyespot is located at the ventral surface. The flagella are very short, measuring less than half the cell length, and relatively thick. Two contractile vacuoles are located near the flagellar bases. Sexual reproduction occurs by fusion of two strongly metabolic (almost amoeboid) cells, resulting in a spherical zygote. The only known species, C. pigra, swims very slowly. It was found in shallow freshwater ponds at 1200-1600 m altitude near Lunz, Austria. The thick flagella and the general cell shape indicate affinity with the prasinophycean genus Nephroselmis, but this needs to be confirmed by electron microscopical investigations.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
