Taxonomic notes
According to Hoham et al. (2002: 1060), many questions remain concerning revisions made by Proschold et al. (2001) that must be resolved before accepting their new generic names for clades that include species of Chlamydomonas and Chloromonas. They note that within the newly constructed Oogamochlamys clade, three strains of Lobochlamys cullelus in VLE (vegetative lysin enzyme) group 9 and six strains of Lobochlamys signis in VLE group 10 could not be resolved with confidence when using an 18S rDNA phylogenetic analysis. - (3 Oct 2011) - Wendy Guiry
Description: Unicellular Chlorophyta sensu Bremer (1985) with two flagella in clockwise basal body orientation; cell wall thin with mucilage layer around the flagellated cell, with or without papilla, the single chloroplast cup-shaped with thickened basal part cylindrical/parietal, the chloroplast surface with incisions, partly lobate; one discontinuous pyrenoid, in basal or lateral position; eyhespot pale red, elliptic to narrowly elongate in an anerior position; with two apical contractile vacuoles; nucleus in central or slightly anterior position. Asexual reproduction by zoospores, rotation of the protoplast by 90 before first cell division ("false transverse division"); sporangial wall with mucilage layer; total lysis of the sporangial wall before release of zoospores by means of a vegetative lysin enzyme. Sexual reproduction by osogamy, homo- or heterothallic; zygotes not ornamented, green.
Comments: The genus is supported by molecular phylogenetic analysis using SSU rRNA sequence comparisons.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
