Holotype species: Pseudobangia kaycoleae K.M.Müller & R.G.Sheath
Publication details: K.M.Müller & R.G.Sheath, 2005: 154
Original publication and holotype designation: Müller, K.M., Cannone, J.J. & Sheath, R.G. (2005). A molecular phylogenetic analysis of the Bangiales (Rhodophyta) and description of a new genus and species, Pseudobangia kaycoleia. Phycologia 44: 146-155.
Precise date of publication: 26 April 2005
Description: The thalli are unbranched, erect filaments that are uniseriate when young and multiseriate when mature. There are multiple stellate chloroplasts, each with a pyrenoid. Attachment to substratum is through rhizoidal extensions of lower cells. Asexual reproduction is by formation of archaeosporangia. Marine. Uniseriate filaments 29.4-49.0 microns wide, multiseriate filaments 34.3 (three cells) to 83.3 microns (seven cells). Maximum length of filaments =1 cm.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
