Halomicronema Abed, Garcia-Pichel & Hernández-Mariné, 2002

Holotype species: Halomicronema excentricum Abed, Garcia-Pichel & Hernández-Mariné

Original publication and holotype designation: Abed, R.M.M., Garcia-Pichel, F. & Hernández-Mariné (2002). Polyphasic characterization of benthic, moderately halophilic, moderately thermophilic cyanobacteria with very thin trichomes and the proposal of Halomicronema excentricum gen. nov., sp. nov. Archives of Microbiology 177: 361-370.

Description: Abed et al. (2002): Moderately halophilic and halotolerant, benthic, marine, filamentous, non-heterocystous cyanobacteria of very thin trichomes. Growth is optimal at salinities between 4.5 and 12% (w/v) total salts and ceases above 17% and below 3%. Trichomes are cylindrical, around or slightly less than 1 |jm wide. Thylakoids are arranged concentrically and parallel to the plasma membrane, single or stacked. Pores are distributed irregularly on cell wall and septa. No junctional pores observed.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
