Andersenia R.Wetherbee & R.F.Waller, 2015

Holotype species: Andersenia nodulosa Wetherbee & Waller

Original publication and holotype designation: Wetherbee, R., Gornik, S.G., Grant, B. & Waller, R.F. (2015). Andersenia, a genus of filamentous, sand-dwelling Pelagophyceae from southeastern Australia. Phycologia 54(1): 35-48.

Description: Filaments uniseriate, unbranched and variable in length up to 1.0 mm, 712 µm in width, surrounded by a gelatinous envelope 12 µm thick. Cells slightly imbricated with one or two golden brown, lobed chloroplasts. Growing filaments became segmented and multicellular, knotted regions developing. A pyrenoid was not observed. Most vegetative cells eventually produced asexual, heterokont zoospores of the Sarcinochrysis type. Filament cross walls were observed following zoospore formation and release, and were shaped like biconcave disks that characterized the genus. Sexual reproduction was not observed. The type species of this genus differs from other members of the Pelagophyceae based on both morphology and the nuclear-encoded SSU ribosomal sequence.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
