Colemanosphaera Nozaki, 2014

Holotype species: Colemanosphaera charkowiensis (Korshikov) H.Nozaki, T.K.Yamada, F.Takahashi, R.Matsuzaki & T.Nakada

Original publication and holotype designation: Nozaki, H., Yamada, T.K., Takahashi, F., Matsuzaki, R. & Nakada, T. (2014). New “missing link” genus of the colonial volvocine green algae gives insights into the evolution of oogamy. BMC Evolutionary Biology 14(37): 1-10.

Description: Vegetative colonies spheroidal in shape, composed of 16 or 32 cells of approximately identical sizes embedded at the peripheral regions of the gelatinous matrix forming a hollow colonial structure. The extracellular matrix of vegetative colonies exhibiting colonial boundaries and cellular envelopes. Each cell biflagellate, more or less angular in front view, containing a massive cup-shaped chloroplast, a stigma, and a nucleus. Two or three contractile vacuoles distributed near the base of the flagella. Chloroplasts containing longitudinal striations on the surface and multiple pyrenoids in mature cells. A gradual decrease in stigma size occurring from the anterior to posterior pole of the colony. Asexual reproduction accomplished by successive divisions of each vegetative cell, forming a square plakea undergoing typical inversion to produce a spheroidal daughter colony.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
