Original publication and holotype designation: Huisman, J.M., Saunders, G.W., Le Gall, L. & Vergés, A. (2016). Rhytimenia, a new genus of red algae based on the rare Kallymenia maculata (Kallymeniaceae, Rhodophyta). Phycologia 55(3): 299-307.

Description: Thallus with foliose gelatinous bullate blades; medulla wholly filamentous, the filaments forming an interconnected network, lacking ganglionic cells; cortex with outer layer of angular cells (in surface view). Carpogonial branch structure with 1 (–2) three-celled carpogonial branches and several spherical subsidiary cells. Cystocarps domed.
