Holotype species: Grammatodinium tongyeonginum Z.Li & H.H.Shin

Original publication and holotype designation: Li, Z., Oh, S.J., Park, J.-W., Lim, W.-A. & Shin, H.H. (2017). Cyst-motile stage relationship, morphology and phylogeny of a new chain-forming, marine dinoflagellate Grammatodinium tongyeonginum gen. & sp. nov. from Korea. Phycologia 56(4): 430-443, 45 fig., 3 tables.

Description: Unarmoured dinoflagellates with prominent longitudinal furrows. Cells elongated, ellipsoidal. Solitary or forming cell chains. Cingulum displaced by about two to eight times its width. The epicone was usually longer than the hypocone. The sulcus extended from the apex to the antapex. The apical groove was horseshoeshaped and extended from the end of the sulcal extension anticlockwise around the apex. The distal end of the apical groove was located next to the extension of the sulcus and more to the ventral side than the proximal end. Chloroplasts present.
