Pentocladia Huisman, 2018

Holotype species: Pentocladia australiensis Huisman

Original publication and holotype designation: Huisman, J.M. (2018). Algae of Australia. Marine benthic algae of north-western Australia. 2. Red algae. pp. [i]-xii, 1-672, 189 figs. Canberra & Melbourne: ABRS & CSIRO Publishing.

Description: Thallus small, mostly prostrate but with some erect determinate laterals, terete; prostrate and indeterminate axes with 5 pericentral cells; determinate branches with 4–6 pericentral cells, not corticated. Attachment by branched multicellular rhizoids arising from ventral pericentral cells of the prostrate axes. Indeterminate axes bearing a branch primordium or lateral branch on every segment, these arising in a spiral sequence with a 1/5 divergence between successive segments. Lateral branches arising on 3 consecutive cells, in a regular sequence of indeterminate branch, determinate branch, indeterminate branch; these groups separated by intervals of 2 segments bearing only branch primordia. Determinate branches in dorsal positions, indeterminate branches in lateral positions. Apices of indeterminate axes lacking trichoblasts, those of determinate branches with branched trichoblasts. Spermatangia in heads, replacing trichoblasts. Cystocarps ovate, terminal on determinate lateral branches. Other reproductive structures not observed.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
