Original publication and holotype designation: Calderón, M.S. & Boo, S.M. (2017). The Phyllophoraceae (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta) from Peru with descriptions of Acletoa tarazonae gen. & sp. nov. and Gymnogongrus caespitosus sp. nov.. Phycologia 56(6): 686-696, 33 figs, 1 table.

Description: Thalli arising from a common basal disc, semiterete, dichotomously to polychotomously branched. Axes multiaxial, with compact cortex and medulla. Auxiliary cells forming gonimoblast initials both downwardly and upwardly directed. Medullary cells laterally connected to clusters of carposporangia. Secondary pit connections between gonimoblast filaments and nearby vegetative cells penetrating the cystocarp boundary. Cystocarp loosely immersed within the medulla, surrounded by one or more layers of secondary medullary cells with thickened cell walls and larger cytoplasm volume. Carpospores released at maturity through carpostomata.
