Description: Thalli erect flat blades, dorsiventrally oriented, attached by a small discoid holdfast; polysiphonous with 5 pericentral cells, the first 4 formed divide to form alae on both sides of the axis; dorsal pericentrals, the first and second to be initiated, form a dorsal layer of smaller cells than those cut off in the dorso-lateral layer by pericentrals 3 and 4. Thalli are covered by small cortical cells cut off by pericentral cells and their derivatives, and a prominent corticated midrib is present. Branch apices inrolled to the ventral side, the dorsal side having trichoblasts, emergent and vesiculate or non-emergent, on every segment of axes. Polysiphonous branches are formed on midribs or margins of blades, exogenous or adventitious (Saenger and Ducker 1971). Germlings are erect and radially oriented, producing a dorsiventrally oriented exogenously derived (Saenger and Ducker 1971) lateral branch. Reproductive structures formed on specially produced branchlets on midrib, surface of blades or marginal on the blade; they may occur on both sides of blades. Fertile branchlets dorsiventrally oriented, adaxially curved, some producing dorsal trichoblasts; gametophytic reproductive apparatuses replacing trichoblasts, also occurring in a dorsal row. Male capitula ovoid to cylindrical, usually without sterile tips. Procarps comprised of a 4-celled carpogonial branch, a basal sterile cell and two laterals. Cystocarps spheroidal and terminal on the fertile branchlet, the distal tip having been shed. Tetrasporangia in lanceolate stichidia, sometimes branched, with inrolled apices; trichoblasts and scar cells may be present or absent on stichidia; tetrasporangia in two longitudinal rows, derived from pericentrals 3 and 4. Two, sometimes 3, cover cells, each having 2 periclinal divisions, enclose the sporangia.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
