Description: Plants reach 40 cm in length, are erect from a crustose base, and, depending on the species, are either terete and irregularly radially branched or flattned with a prominent midrib and marginally proliferous. Axes are uniaxial, each axial cell giving rise to a single periaxial cell and remaining distinct in lower cross sections. Carpogonial branches are 3-4-celled, sterile cells occasionally being borne on the hypogynous or basal cells. Fertilization results in 3-7 connecting filaments issuing from the carpogonium. Cystocarps are composed of a central fusion cell incorporating cells of the cortical axial filament containing the auxiliary cell, the auxiliary cell, and inner gonimoblast layers. Carposporangia form in chains of 2-4 on short sterile gonimoblast filaments radiating from the fusion cell, the carposporophyte enveloped by a filamentous hull. Spermatangia are unreported. Tetrasporangia are attached to the bearing cells by a basal pit connection.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
