Description: The filaments are simple, flaccid, 1.5-3(-10) cm long, affixed to rocky substrate in the upper intertidal zone by rhizoids extending from the lower cells of the filament within a common outer cell wall. Filaments are uniseriate in lower part, multiseriate above; they are 13-23 microns wide in the rhizoid area, 17-40 microns wide in the sterile region, widening to 30-55(-63) microns (male) or (42-)45-68(-77)microns (female) in the fertile upper filament. The alga is monoecious; spermatangia and presumed zygotosporangia are intermixed in some filaments but apparently singly in others. The spematangia are pale, whereas presumed zygotosporangia are darkly pigmented. Archeospores are produced in the upper part of the filament. Filament spores germinate to produce conchocelis or develop directly into filaments.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
