Description: An entirely fossil genus of ocellus-bearing centric diatoms; cell shape and habit unknown. Distributed in the Miocene(?). Valves circular, shallow, with a series of concentric undulations on the valve face and a short but distinct mantle. The valve face is separated from the mantle by a prominent rim. Striae uniseriate, radiating from the centre, which is irregularly areolate, continuing down the mantle which is variously ribbed. Areolae round, apparently simple; vela missing (eroded?) in samples investigated, although occasionally there are areolae that appear domed and perforate. Two conspicuous rimmed ocelli occur on the valve face, on opposite sides of the valve; the small pores (poreli) within the ocellus are in radial rows. Two rimoportulae present, one on either side of the ocellar axis, each about halfway between the centre and the edge of the valve face; the rimoportula axis is perpendicular to or oblique to the ocellar axis. Girdle unknown.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Cox, E.J. (2015). Coscinodiscophyceae, Mediophyceae, Fragilariophyceae, Bacillariophyceae (Diatoms). In: Syllabus of plant families. Adolf Engler's Syllabus der Pflanzenfamilien. 13th Ed. Photoautotrophic eukaryotic algae Glaucocystophyta, Cryptophyta, Dinophyta/Dinozoa, Heterokontophyta/Ochrophyta, Chlorarachniophyta/Cercozoa, Euglenophyta/Euglenozoa, Chlorophyta, Streptophyta p.p. (Frey, W. Eds), pp. 64-103. Stuttgart: Borntraeger Science Publishers.

Comments: VanLandingham (1978) includes this genus in Auliscus but the organisation of the valve, areolae, etc. is, we believe, sufficiently distinctive to maintain a separate genus. Schmidt (1874-1959) also maintained this distinction, based on the contrast between the sculptured valve face of Auliscus and the simply porous one of Pseudauliscus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
