Description: Adelphoparasite, possibly hemiparasitic, on Streblocladia. Tufts of polysiphonous branches, less than 1 mm long, attached to host by rhizoidal outgrowths that grow between host cells. Upright branches monopodial, branch tips curved upward, exogenously producing alternate branches in more or less two rows on the dorsal sides of the axes. Vegetative trichoblasts not formed; 4 pericentral cells uncorticated except for a few proximal corticating cells on some plants. Reproductive structures borne on short dorsal branchlets. Tetrasporangia, 1 per segment, in alternating dorsal positions in subsequent segments in the type species, but in straight rows in M. africana. Procarps on 2nd segment of trichoblast, cystocarps spheroid to ovoid. Male capitula conical, replacing trichoblasts on dorsal side of fertile branchlet; sometimes trichoblast branching to support 2 capitula.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
