Description: Thallus shortly stipitate or sessile with lobed or rounded blades with age becoming divided and laciniate. Structure multiaxial, composed of a mostly filamentous medulla; cortex composed of three to five layers of isodiametric cells in size decreasing towards the surface; stellate cells forming a compact subcortical layer. Dioecious; polycarpogonial three-celled carpogonial branches borne on supporting cell, which also produces four to six subsidiary cells. Fusion cells and connecting filaments are present, auxiliary cells not identified. Gonimoblasts arising from vegetative cells. Carposporangia formed in groups, intermixed with filaments. Carposporophytes immersed in young thalli, in mature thalli progressively more protuberant. Spermatangia in superficial sori on both sides of the lamina. Tetrasporangia not found in thalli bearing blades. Carpospores germinate to produce crustose thalli.
