Description: Thallus prostrate, growing as spreading flattened dorsiventral blades attached by simple or branched multicellular rhizoids with or without multicellular digitate terminal pads. Structure uniaxial or multiaxial, with a horizontally growing mesothallus giving rise to assurgent dorsal and ventral perithallial filaments. Hairs present or absent. Vesicular cells terminating dorsal and, occasionally, ventral perithallial filaments. Where known, spermatangial axes forming in male nemathecia and developing into dense elongate packets following the complete conversion of nemathecial paraphyses. Carpogonial branches and auxiliary cell branches produced in female nemathecia. Auxiliary cell branches 3- or 4- celled. Gonimoblasts developing from diploidised auxiliary cells. Tetrasporangia irregularly cruciate to irregularly zonate, formed in nemathecia devoid of paraphyses.
