Microphyllum Weber-van Bosse, 1928

Holotype species: Microphyllum borneense Weber Bosse

Original publication and holotype designation: Weber-van Bosse, A. (1928). Liste des algues du Siboga, IV. Rhodophyceae. Troisème partie. Gigartinales et Rhodymeniales et tableau de la distribution des Chlorophycées, Phaeophycées et Rhodophycées de l'Archipel Malaisien. Siboga-Expeditie Monographie 59d. pp. 393-533, figs 143-213, pls XI-XVI. Leiden: E.J. Brill.

Description: Thallus auriculate, blades arising from a rhizomatous holdfast via a small stipe. Construction multiaxial, cortex of 2-4 layers of small cells, the outermost cells ovoid. Medulla of 1-2 layers of large colourless cells. Spermatangial plants unknown. Carpogonial plants unknown; gonimoblast developing outwards often with 2-3 lobes, almost all cells forming carposporangia. Cystocarps hemispherical, large and protruding, ostiolate, formed on both sides of the blade, tela arachnoidea absent. Tetrasporangia scattered throughout the blade, formed in an unmodified cortex. Spores regularly cruciately arranged. This genus is poorly known but is characterized by an auriculate thallus, medullary cells in 1-2 layers, and the absence of a tela arachnoidea in the cystocarp. Norris (1991) mentioned some oblique divisions of cortical cells in a cystocarp-bearing plants which he though might represent spermatangia; this would be unusual as most other species referred to the Rhodymeniaceae are dioecious.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Saunders, G.W. & McDonald, B. (2010). DNA barcoding reveals multiple overlooked Australian species of the red algal order Rhodymeniales (Florideophyceae), with resurrection of Halopeltis J. Agardh and description of Pseudohalopeltis gen. nov. Botany 88: 639-667, 73 figs.

Comments: Microphyllum borneense is known from the subtidal of Borneo and South Africa at depths of up to 57 m. M. crispum (W.R. Taylor) Dawson is found in deep water off the Pacific coast of Mexico (Dawson 1963).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
