Erythrostachys J.Agardh ex Jean White, 1912

Holotype species: Erythrostachys prolifera J.Agardh ex Jean White

Original publication and holotype designation: Ewart, A.J., White, J., Rees, B. & Wood, B. (1912). Contribution to the flora of Australia. No. 18. Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria 24(N.S.): 255-269, Plates 52-56.

Description: Erect thallus, approximately 12.5 cm long, monopodial axis ca 1 mm broad, probably polysiphonous. Axis is strongly corticated but secondary branches seem to have no cortication, whereas tertiary and ultimate branchlets are uniseriate. Secondary branches in clusters of ca 5-6, clusters alternating on the axis. Ultimate branchlets forcipate, with acuminate ends. Reproductive stages unknown.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.

Comments: This is an incompletely described genus that was assigned to the Rhodomelaceae by J. White, possibly on the basis of comments by Reinboldt and J. Agardh (mistakenly cited as T. Agardh by White). A series of illustrations is provided in the type description, but they are inconclusive in estimating the alga's relationships. Known only from a collection by Hussey in South Australia.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
