Description: Thalli erect, arising from a rhizoidal holdfast, up to 20 cm long, with one to several stupose axes giving rise to many narrow (200-1000 mm) densely branched complanate to twisted upper branches. Growth initiated by a row of apical cells, with the thallus two cells thick immediately below the apical cells. Cells with numerous discoid chloroplasts. Scattered hair tufts present. Sporangia solitary, scattered on the surface of the upper branches, subspherical, 100-150 mm in diameter, with a vertically divided stalk cell and dividing to form 4 spores. Gametophytes unknown. The only record of male plants (Levring 1940) requires verification as the figure appears to show no more than immature hairs. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
