Description: The most characteristic feature of this genus is the true hairs, which have an elongated basal cell with a bulbous enlargement in the proximal end. The hairs develop from the symtagmatic filaments. The species in this genus are all small filamentous or the filaments lie close together and form a syntagmatic crustose plant, probably depending on the substratum. Short erect filaments develop which again may branch in the apical part. The apical part of the erect filaments may be transformed into a plurilocular sporangium, or in case of branched erect parts the branch system in toto may be transformed into a sporangium with a heart-shaped outline. The life history of the type species, Phaeostroma pustulosum, is of the direct type. Both unilocular and plurilocular sporangia occur in this species both the swarmers from these sporangia seem to play the same role in the life history (Pedersen 1981c).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
