Description: Plants epiphytic, composed of irregular fan-like disc with a few erect thalli. Basal disc consisting of single layer of closely appressed filaments of pigmented cells with a marginal meristem. Erect thalli partly polystichous, arising from individual cells of the basal disc, filiform, terete, patent, occasionally branched, tapering very gradually, with tiers of 2 or 3 cells containing many disc-shaped chloroplasts with pyrenoid. Terminal phaeophycean hairs present on erect thallus. Vegetative reproduction occurs by stolon-like filaments. Plurilocular sporangia intercalary, subterminal or terminal on erect thallus, ectocarpoid or intercalary. Each locule has its own release pores. Unilocular sporangia unknown. Life history unknown. Very close to Giraudia.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
