Description: Unicellular, planktonic, typically spherical, lacking a cell wall, but surrounded by a thick mucilage layer. Has a single, large, lobed, parietal chloroplast with central pyrenoid. Thylakoids do not penetrate the pyrenoid. Contains B-Type II phycoerythrin. Nucleus in close contact with the pyrenoid through protrusions which penetrate into membrane-lined channels in the pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by binary fission. Sexual reproduction unknown. Reported from the North Atlantic and Georgia Strait, British Columbia.
