Description: Terete, gelatino-cartilaginous, with a somewhat pyramidal aspect. Annual. Radially and abundantly branched to four orders; branches tapered at both ends. Uniaxial, with each axial cell bearing two pericentral cells at right angles to each other. Medulla of sparse filaments; cortical cells spherical. Rhizoids rare. Secondary pit connections lacking. Cuticle present. Pit plugs lacking cap layers. Dioecious. Carpogonium terminating a distally recurved, adventitious filament, sometimes with laterals proximally. Auxiliary cell on a separate, long, adventitious filament; proximal cells frequently with lateral branches. All cells of cystocarp becoming relatively large carposporangia. Spermatangial superficial, forming a continuous layer near distal ends of branches. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia large, irregularly cruciate or irregularly zonate. Fertile in spring and summer.
