Holotype species: Minium parvum R.L.Moe
Original publication and holotype designation: Moe, R.L. (1979). Minium parvum gen. et sp. nov., a crustose member of the Rhodymeniales (Rhodophyta). Phycologia 18: 38-46.
Request PDFDescription: Thallus a non-calcareous, solid crust; construction multiaxial, basal layer composed of pseudodichotomously branched prostrate filaments, giving rise to short erect filaments. Rhizoids and vesicular cells absent. Gametangial plants dioecious; spermatangial sori superficial and nemathecial. Procarpic, carpogonial branch 3-celled, auxiliary cell branch 2 celled, gonimoblast developing outwards from a small fusion cell. Cystocarps ostiolate, scattered, never coronate, protruding outwards, most cells forming carposporangia, tela arachnoidea absent. Tetrasporangia formed terminally from cortical filaments in nemathecia. Spores regularly cruciately arranged. Moe (1979) showed that Minium parvum has a 'Polysiphonia-type' life history in culture, although fertilization of female plants was not obtained.

Comments: Minium parvum grows epiphytically on articulated coralline algae at depths of 5-25 m, generally on exposed coasts. Known only from the Farallon Is. and Carmel Bay, California, and a few localities in British Columbia.
