Description: Uniaxial, terete, mucilaginous, irregularly branched to two orders. Central axial filament of large cells, each bearing dense, subdichotomously branched cortical fascicles. Rhizoids from inner cortical cells cloaking axis. Hairs present. Cuticle and secondary pit connections lacking. Monoecious. Carpogonium terminating a distally recurved, proximally branched, adventitious filament. Fertilized carpogonium dividing, each product fusing with a cell of the carpogonial branch, then producing connecting filaments that contact a succession of usually proximal auxiliary cells on separate, proximally branched, adventitious filaments. Cystocarp embedded in thallus; most if not all cells maturing into relatively small carposporangia. Spermatangia distal on distal cells of cortical fascicles, cut off by oblique walls. Tetrasporophyte heteromorphic, crustose. Tetrasporangia cruciate.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
