Description: Foliose thalli, up to 40 cm tall, 25 mm broad, with polysiphonous axis that is sometimes surround by filamentous cortication forming a visible but ill-defind midrib. Blades pinnately branched, marginal branches foliose, constricted proximally. Distal part of thallus not inrolled; apex depressed-mucronate with radially oriented trichoblasts. Pericentral cells 5, radially elongate and embedded in pseudoparenchymatous tissue; spaces between large cells may be occupied by filaments which they form. Bilateral symmetry formed by outward elongation of two pairs of pericentral cells resulting in flat blades; 5th pericentral degenerates (Saenger and others 1971). Differing from other Chondrieae in that pericentral cells are non-stratified rather than in tiers. Cell wall thickenings occur in pericentrals and other interior cells. Branches formed on basal cell of trichoblast (Saenger and others 1971); branches in older plants attached to branched flattened axes formed by persistent and strongly corticated midrib tissue from which alae were eroded. Reproductive structures on small marginal cylindrical to flattened, sometimes branched proliferations. Tetrasporangia embedded in cortex in whorls of 3-5 in middle to distal regions of proliferation. Cystocarps small, spheroidal, usually 1 embedded in each proliferation branch. Male capitula plate-like with vein of sterile cells and marginal sterile cells.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.

Comments: Low littoral to subtidal, 3 species in New Zealand. Two species are not well defined: one on the Columbian Caribbean coast (Taylor 1942), the other from 40 fathoms, Marion Island, SW Indian Ocean (Dickie 1876).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
