Taxonomic note
Papenfuss (1964: 32) notes: "Plectoderma was erected by Reinsch (1875, p. 52) on the basis of two species, P. minus and P. majus. De Toni (1905, p. 1764) has placed the genus in the synonymy of Melobesia Lamouroux, and to judge from Reinsch's illustrations of the two species it would seem that both are representative of encrusting corallines - Melobesia of Fosliella. The South Georgia plant referred to P. minus by Reinsch is not representative of this species, but what it may be cannot be determined from this description and illustrations." - (16 September 2008) - G.M. Guiry
