Description: Plants consisting of upright ligulate fronds; blades simple to irregularly or subdichotomously branched, with smooth margins; cortex single-layered, consisting of small pigmented cells, which are irregularly rounded to angular in surface view and arranged in an arcuate pattern over the larger medullary cells ; medulla of large colourless, thick-walled cells, in 1-2 (-3) layers; tetrasporangia cruciately divided, in anticlinally produced chains, aggregated in small, elevated, rounded nemathecia scattered over the blade surfaces; gametophytes dioecious; gonimoblast filaments developing inwardly between the medullary cells, so that the carposporophytes are deeply embedded and at maturity protrude on both surfaces of the frond, where they are scattered on the distal portions; the carposporophytes have multi-layered pericarps with secondary pit connections between the anticlinal cell rows and lack ostioles; spermatangia are formed in slightly elevated sori on mid-blade surfaces and are produced from spermatangial mother cells cut off from cortical cells.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
